GUWAHATI: The All Assam Secondary (Additional) Contractual Teachers Association urged the newly formed state government to regularize their jobs as promised by former chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal government.

It is to be mentioned here that in the July 2020, the then Sarbananda Sonowal led-state government decided that all the contractual teachers in the state High Schools would be granted with a 'regular' status.

The government promised to provide all the facilities and status to the 5190 contractual teachers as per the norms of a regular job.

However, it's been a year since the assurance were made but the government failed to initiate any of the promises till date with no salary since the last three months- March, April and May.

The contractual teachers in the state had to go through a rough patch of life with several protests and agitations. Finally the teachers had to move to the High Court and the Court in turn ordered the government to grant them with the "regular status".

Meanwhile, speaking to The Sentinel, All Assam Secondary (Additional) Contractual Teachers Association, general sectary Moidhar Kalita said, "In July 2020, the Sonowal government promised to make the high school contractual teachers regular."

Further Kalita added that, "On 13th August, 2020, a notification was also been issued with this regard by the Secondary Education Department and now it's been a year since the notification was been issued but till now none of the promises made have been fulfilled."

"On the other hand we are deprived of our salary from the last three months," he added.

Kalita also alleged that as per the new norms the teachers are suppose to withdraw their salaries from the Assam State Treasury but still the teachers are withdrawing via ceiling system for which the salaries are still not regular.

Notably, as per the notification issued on 13th August, 2020 within 90 days all promises will be fulfilled and the contractual teachers will get the regular job status, alleged the general sectary.

With this the All Assam Secondary (Additional) Contractual Teachers Association hopes that the new government under the leadership of Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma will work on the promises made by the previous Assam government.
