GUWAHATI: The All India Gramin Dak Sevaks Union (AIGDSU) of Assam circle staged a hunger strike on Wednesday on the Meghdoot Bhaban premises demanding the settlement of their various demands.

The AIGDSU also submitted a memorandum to the secretary of the Department of Posts, New Delhi through the Chief Postmaster General, Assam Circle. The demands raised by the GDS employees includes civil servant status to all GDS employees, weightage for senior GDS employees for the length of service rendered by them as recommended by the Kamlesh Chandra Committee, enhancement of group insurance up to Rs. 5,00,000, medical facilities to GDS employees under Oriental Insurance Scheme, paying retirement/ terminal benefits on the day of retirement and a few other demands.

Talking to The Sentinel AIGDSU circle secretary Dhanya Kanta Borah said, “Directed by the All India Gramin Dak Sevaks Union Central Headquarters we staged hunger strike on December 19 at the division level. On February 20 the GDS employees will stage protest at Dak Bhawan, New Delhi. The central committee has further taken the decision to stage indefinite strike if the government and the department fail to solve the issues.”
