GUWAHATI: The police arrested a person, Pranab Goswami, in corruption in the Directorate of Library Services. Goswami is the husband of former Library Services Director Rumi Goswami.
Current Director of Library Service Dinmoni Das filed an FIR at Panbazar Police Station on October 26 this year against retired director Rumi Goswami. Panbazar police registered a case (263/22 u/s 406/409 of IPC) in this connection.
According to police sources, former director Rumi withdrew Rs 46.13 lakh with self-cheques from the bank. According to rules, a Director cannot withdraw over Rs 5,000. Exceeding this amount, the Director has to issue account-payee checks. The amount in question, according to police, was to foot a contractor's bills. According to the police, it has come to light during the investigation that the former Director does not have any receipt from various rural libraries against the amount spent.
After that, the former Director submitted a few bills without signatures and money receipts, the police said. According to police sources, the former Director withdrew Rs 10 lakh on December 21, 2021, Rs 13 lakh on January 3, 2022, Rs 6 lakh on February 5, 2022, Rs 13 lakh on February 15, 2022, and Rs 4.13 lakh on February 25, 2022.
The police arrested the husband of the former director as he was the contractor (supplier) who showed to have done the work.
The former Director, who superannuated on February 28 this year, got anticipatory bail from the Gauhati High Court.
