Improve infrastructure of government schools: Young Assam

GUWAHATI: Young Assam (Save Education, Save Employment) has termed Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's recent comment on government schools as "unfortunate". The Chief Minister had said that if the number of students enrolling in government schools continued to decrease, the government might have to offer voluntary retirement to the government school teachers within 10 years' time.

Addressing a press conference in Guwahati on Tuesday, Young Assam advisor Subrata Talukdar said that the Chief Minister's comment proved his government's "failure". He said that in Assam, in November 2021 there were a total of 56,84,487 students studying in government schools. "There are 814 primary schools in Assam with no teachers while there are 3,716 primary schools with only one teacher. There are 27,907 primary schools with no electricity connection, 2,462 upper primary schools and 152 high schools with no electricity. This is the sorry state of affairs in government schools," he said.

Talukdar further said, "The Assam Government must study the government schools of other States like Delhi and Kerala and introduce a similar education model here."

Young Assam has demanded the government to improve the infrastructure of government schools, to appoint teachers and to solve the problems of the teachers of government schools.
