GUWAHATI: Housing and Urban Affairs Minister of Assam Ashok Singhal mentioned that all pipes are tested before they are installed for the water supply process. He said that over 15,000 people in the city will be receiving drinking water through these pipelines within this month.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday, the minister mentioned that all pipes have to pass hydrostatic testing before installation, and if any leaks happen after installation, steps are taken to repair the same at the earliest.

This statement has come at a time when incidents of water pipe leaks have become a regular affair in the city.

The minister added that some problems happen because of the construction work carried out after the pipes are laid, and the same cannot be detected.

Speaking about the repair work after the Kharghuli incident, the minister said that the work would be completed in two months. He also said that the 20 District Metering Areas (DMAs) will be inaugurated within the month, and around 15,000 people will receive water at their homes soon after that. By the end of 2024, the Guwahati Jal Board is expected to have 1.5 lakh consumers.

The minister added, "The water supply has not been suspended for four to five days in any part of the city, as the Guwahati Jal Board has been supplying water regularly. I do not have any data of water not being supplied in any part of the city."

Ashok Singhal also said that the demand for money in the name of water connections is completely false and that proper steps are in place to avoid the same.
