 GUWAHATI: An All-Assam Inter-College/University speech competition on the topic ‘Lachit Barphukan’s Patriotism and Present Generation,’ commemorating the birth anniversary of the great Assamese hero, was organized today in Dispur College by the debate and symposium section of the College Students’ Union in association with Guwahati Lachit Sangha. A total of 28 participants from across various institutions in the state participated in the event supervised by Dhrubajit Gogoi, Assistant Professor, Department of Economics and Faculty In-Charge of the Debate and Symposium Section.

During the inaugural session, Dr. Navajyoti Borah, Principal, Dispur College, spoke on the legacy of Bir Lachit Barphukan and his unique historical as well as socio-political significance to the region. Expressing his gratitude to Guwahati Lachit Sangha for collaborating with the college, he emphasized how such competitions could motivate the present generation to engage in intellectual discussions on the rich heritage of Assam and its heroes.

Mrinal Patowary, General Secretary, Lachit Sangha, too, highlighted in his speech the importance of the event in initiating academic debate and dialogue on the undaunted bravery and sacrifice of the great Assamese leader.

The inaugural session was also attended by Dr. Sanchay Jyoti Bora, Principal, Pandu College; Dr. Sunita Agarwalla, Vice Principal, Dispur College; Dr. Ajoy Mitra, IQAC Coordinator, Dispur College; Dr. Sashi Mohan Das, Dispur College Students’ Welfare Officer; various executives from Guwahati Lachit Sangha, including Saurav Hazarika, Nipul Das, Santanu Kalita, Simanta Das, Anupam Deka, and Dipankar Dasgupta; as well as faculty members and students from various departments of the college. Bishaldeep Kakati, Advocate, Gauhati High Court, and noted Assamese writer and journalist Pranjit Das had been invited as judges of the competition, while the chair of the speaker was graced by Vice Principal, Dispur College, Dr. Agarwalla.

Dorothy Bora from Cotton University was able to win the coveted first prize, while the second and third positions were grabbed by Arunima Dhar from Assam Royal Global University and Rahul Rohan Paul from KC Das Commerce College, respectively. The event, hosted by Lima Kalita, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Assamese, came to an end with a vote of thanks by Leena Bhagawati, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Economics, Dispur College, stated a press release.
