GUWAHATI: Unruly events escalating into fisticuffs have become the Cottonians' way these days. Such an inter-hostel rivalry last night led to the head injury of a hostel inmate, Bharat Saharia of Swahid Mojammil Haque Hostel, needing 16 stitches on his head. Two other boarders of the hostel – orthopedically-handicapped Dinkumoni Das and visually impaired Pradunya Bora – also sustained injuries in the attack.
The boarders of Swahid Mojammil Haque (SMH) Hostel lodged an FIR at Panbazar Police Station against 13 boarders of Rajani Kanta Bordoloi (RKB) Hostel in this connection.
Injured Bharat Saharia, a UG student, said, "I had an exam today. Around 1.45 am, a group of around 40 boarders from RKB Hostel came to our hostel and threw away liquor bottles, bricks, fire extinguishing cylinders etc. They broke open the door of my room and banged liquor bottles and other objects on my head. I could not utter any word and fell unconscious. Some of my colleagues also sustained injuries in the attack. My hostel inmates took me to the GMCH. Now I have 16 stitches on the head."
Another boarder, Pallab Das, said, "After Abhisekh Mahanta of the university joined the BJP, the boarders of RKB Hostel keep criticizing us on social media. They allege that we have a link with political parties. We just clarified that we have no connection with any political parties. That might have irked them. When they came to our hospital last night, I was reading. I received a phone call from one of our boarders that the boys from the other hostel came to attack me I fled the room through the rear door and went to Panbazar Police Station and reported the incident. We are not secured."
It is not the first such incident at Cotton University. The last incident in the university was on the day of the results of the student union election. Fifteen students sustained injuries in that incident. The attackers damaged one of the hostels. The erring borders had to cough up money for breaking the hostel in that incident. However, the university authorities stop short of taking any exemplary punishments to the erring students.
