GUWAHATI: The All Assam Students' Union (AASU) on Sunday demanded that stringent and exemplary punishment should be meted out to those responsible for "corruption and irregularities" in the National Register of Citizens (NRC) updation process in the State, and asserted that no guilty person should be spared for any reason.

In statement issued on Sunday, AASU's president in-charge Utpal Sarma and general secretary Sankor Jyoti Baruah demanded that the Centre and the State Government must take the strictest of action against all those who vitiated the NRC update process, which was undertaken under the supervision of the Supreme Court in accordance with the provisions of the Assam Accord.

Sarma and Baruah stated that the decision to upgrade the NRC was taken only as a result of agitation by the people of Assam. Therefore, they said, any corruption or irregularity involving the NRC updation process can never be tolerated.

The duo stated that the AASU is not happy with the outcome of the NRC updation process, because some defects marked the entire process. The shortcomings in the NRC updation process were the result of not strictly adhering to directives issued by the Supreme Court, they stated. Sarma and Baruah added that the AASU had consequently approached the Supreme Court as soon as the NRC was published, in order to seek in-depth re-examination of the NRC.

Re-examination is essential to ensure an NRC that is free from the names of illegal Bangladeshi migrants, the two AASU leaders stated. They urged the Centre and the State Government to also move the Supreme Court for re-examination of the NR, adding that the AASU will not rest till an error-free NRC is prepared.
