GUWAHATI: Housing and Urban Affairs and Irrigation Minister Ashok Singhal is aiming for speedy implementation of 'Mission Flood Free Guwahati'.
While eviction, cleaning of drains and drains, digging etc., are going on at various places in the city, the Minister today conducted a close review of various activities from the grassroots level for the implementation, in the presence of Commissioner Secretary Kavita Padmanabhan, Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup Metropolitan District Pallav Gopal Jha. He also conducted review meetings. To effectively implement 'Mission Flood Free Guwahati' before the monsoon, the Minister gave the policy of future course of action for the department. The minister directed the officials concerned to revive the rivers - Bharlu, Bahini, Lakhijan, Marabharlu and Basistha - and intensify the eviction drive at various places and make 'Mission Flood-free Guwahati' a success.
Talking to reporters on the premises of the deputy commissioner's office, Singhal said that as per the decision of 'Mission Flood-free Guwahati', the Public Works Department would make about an 890-km-long stretch of about 890 km of the drains along 954 roads in the city free of garbage. On the other hand, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation will carry out the 280-km stretch of 140 drains as well as the garbage clearance of the five rivers of the city namely Bharlu, Bahini, Lakhimijan, Mara Bharlu and Basistha rivers.
On the other hand, a plan has been made to remove encroachments at around 42 places in the city, he said, adding that the Kamrup Metropolitan District Administration will take steps to free such places which have shrunk the drains or rivers with illegal encroachments.
