GUWAHATI: The medium of education at the primary and high school level must be the indigenous tribal languages. Moreover, a separate policy must be formulated for recruitment of tribal-language teachers and a special TET (Teachers Eligibility Test) must be held in this regard.

These demands have been made by the ITSSA (Indigenous Tribal Sahitya Sabha, Assam on Saturday. Mentionably, the decisions of the apex body of indigenous saitya sabhas were taken at the organisation's excecutive body meeting held here recently.

The ITSSA is the umbrella organisation of a number of proiminent sahitya sabhas of the indigenous communities of Assam.

ITSSA secretary general Kamala Kanta Mushahary told The Sentinel, "According to NEP (National Education Policy) — 2020, indigenous tribal languages like Mishing, Rava, Tiwa, and Deuri — should be the medium of instruction in educational institutions up to Class-V; Karbi till Class VIII; and also adoption of the Dimasa language as a subject at the school level."

Mushahary added, "The Government should immediately release the pending 40% of the corpus fund meant for the various indigenous sahitya sabhas."
