GUWAHATI: Jirsong Theatre is set to celebrate a three-day programme theatre festival, 'Swayam,' at Sri Sri Madhabdev Auditorium in Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra from September 8 to 10.
The National School of Drama (NSD) graduate and Sangeet Natak Akademi Bismillah Khan Award winner Rabijita Gogoi started the Jirsong Theatre in 1995 in Diphu.
The theatre has staged more than 40 plays in Assamese, Karbi, Boro, Nagamese, and Hindi in the Northeast, including Assam. Jirsong Theatre, which has performed in more than 20 national and international festivals in different parts of India, mainly focuses on women and social values. The theatre institute has been providing regular theatre training and performances to students through Jirsong Studio at Rajgad since 2017.
The theatre will feature 'Iti Mrinalini,' based on Rabindranath Tagore's story 'Stri Patra', 'Antigone Mania', a contemporary adaptation of Sophocles' world-famous play 'Antigone, and Sahitya and Sangeet Natak Akademi Award winner Arun Sharma's 'Ahar,' which will be staged on September 8, 9, and 10. All the plays are directed by Rabijita Gogoi.
A three-discussion session on the New Generation Assamese Drama, Drama Readings, Presentations, and Audience, and Drama and Women will be organized. The discussion sessions will be attended by theatre warriors Samudra Kajal Saikia, Himanshu Prasad Das, Pari Sarania, Bhaskar Baruah, Anupam Saikia, Subrata Jyoti Neog, Mrinal Jyoti Goswami, Jyoti Prasad Bhuyan, Anup Hazarika, Bhagirathi, Radhika Goswami, Papari Medhi, Manimala Das, and Nikhileshwar Baruah, stated a press release.
