Junior engineer Debashis Das caught red-handed with bribe at Dispur

GUWAHATI: Sleuths of the Directorate of Vigilance & Anti-Corruption on Wednesday arrested one Debashis Das, a junior engineer (JE) at the office of the Director of Municipal Administration after catching him red-handed while taking a bribe of Rs 25,000 from a contractor for processing a file for payment against the work already completed under the SOPD scheme.

The contractor had earlier apprised the Directorate of Vigilance & Anti-Corruption that Das had demanded a bribe of Rs 50,000 for processing his bill. Accordingly, a trap was laid near the office of Director of Municipal Administration at Dispur and Das was caught immediately after accepting an amount of Rs 25,000 from the complainant at 12:30 pm today. The money was seized from Das' possession in the presence of independent witnesses.

A search was subsequently conducted at Das' residence in the Borthakur Mill area here and an additional amount of Rs 3 lakh in cash was seized along with some incriminating documents.

A case has been registered in the ACB Police Station (No 13/2022 u/s 7(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988) against Debashis Das.
