Guwahati:
While the government is talking about Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and river cleaning
programs a look at the banks of Brahmaputra in Guwahati would make you cringe
and think twice. It has already been two days of Kali puja celebrations but the
idols are still lying at the Lachit Ghat (banks of Brahmaputra) alongside filth
and dirt. People who came to immerse the idols just left them there.
The sight is simply pitiful and sad. It speaks volumes
about peoples' lack of respect and care not just for the deities but also for
the environment and cleanliness.
A visit to the river bank and anyone would feel
pathetic at the sight. While the government is spending crores of rupees on
cleaning the rivers and water bodies, here is an example where the river is
struggling to breathe. It shows the carelessness of the people towards the
water bodies and the rivers.
Although the Kamrup district administration had made
arrangements for the immersion of the
Durga idols, no such arrangement was made for Kali idol immersion. After
Sentinel Digital and other journalists informed the district administration
about the condition, Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup Metro, Biswajit Pegu assured
that immediate steps would be taken to clean up Lachit Ghat.
"Usually there
is no such arrangement for Kali idols immersion, like the way we do for the
Durga puja. But since we have been informed about the condition of the river
bank we will ask GMC to clean up the place within 3-4 days," DC Pegu said.
Even before the river bank gets cleaned up it's already
time for another puja, Chaath puja.
However, the Kamrup district administration has issued guidelines to be followed strictly for Chaath puja and to conduct and celebrate the occasion smoothly.
