Guwahati: On the night of 7 December, the Kamrup Metropolitan (M) District Administration along with the Assam Police conducted an enforcement drive against night buses at the Guwahati Inter State Bus Terminal (ISBT) in Lokhora.

The Administration instructed the drivers as well as the owners of these buses to install all the necessary equipment in the vehicle including lights and other gadgets. This has been done to tackle fog during the winter season. It is worth noting that fog is one of the main reasons behind road accidents in the state.

It has been found that some night buses were carrying cargo and goods during this drive. According to the law, passenger buses are prohibited from carrying cargo and goods and it constitutes a violation.

A total of 11 cases have been registered against those who were found to be guilty of committing this violation.

Meanwhile, the District Administration has been vigilant in monitoring the implementation of the recently introduced helmet rule. According to this rule, the pillion rider is mandated to wear the helmet along with the rider.

A fine of Rs. 1000 will be imposed on the violators and an FIR might be lodged against the repeated violators, the DTO officials said.

The administration along with the district transport department have jointly registered 703 cases as a part of their massive helmet enforcement drive conducted in several parts of Guwahati. On the first day of the drive, a penalty of Rs. 46,000 was collected as on-spot fines. This rule had been implemented from 1 December.

A lot of people, especially youngsters, die due to road accidents every year in Assam and the parents are devastated as a result. Hence, the CM has pledged to take on this issue with utter seriousness and put an end to this problem thereby saving lives.
