GUWAHATI: The Kamrup (M) District Administration carried out an eviction drive in the Silsaku Beel in the Chachal area near the VIP Road during the incessant rains today.
The district administration evicted the houses constructed beyond the bamboo fence erected. The encroachers dismantled the bamboo fence and encroached upon the land.
In 2014, the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) issued a notice of the removal of illegal encroachment in the Silsako Lake. "Any person encroaching upon Silsako beel should vacate the land and remove any unauthorized structure immediately," a GMDA stated in a press statement.
"Otherwise, such encroachment and unauthorized structure shall face eviction by force as per provisions of Assam Land Revenue Regulation Act and Guwahati Water-bodies Preservation and Conservation Act," it added.
The GMDA said encroachment of Silsako beel in Guwahati is a criminal offence under Guwahati Water Bodies Preservation and Conservation Act 2008.
