GUWAHATI: The COVID-19 cases in Assam along with Kamrup (Metro) are witnessing a constant surge. Speaking to The Sentinel an NHM, Assam official said that from April 1 till May 14, the state recorded 11309 active cases with 14224 patients discharged and 321 deaths has only been reported from Kamrup (Metro). On the other hand 8957 patients are currently under home quarantine.

Earlier on May 11, the state witnessed a massive spike in cases along with deaths. On this day 1585 COVID-19 positive cases was reported and 35 people succumb to the infection.

In the light of the increasing numbers in COVID-19 patients, Principal Sectary to the Health and Family Welfare, Anurag Goel in a letter to the Deputy Commissioner Kamrup (M) directed to set up additional COVID Care Centres (CCC) in the city outside state government hospitals/institutions.

Further as per the letter, now it has been decided that, at this stage, CCCs will be made functional at following locations in a phased manner depending on the case load. The locations are:

Delhi Public School, Ahomgaon with a bed capacity of 900-970, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME) Development Institute, Guwahati with a bed capacity of 300, IIT, Guwahati with a bed capacity of 500, IIHM with a bed capacity of 500, Assam Engineering College with a bed capacity of 800, Veterinary College with a bed capacity of 800 and GIMT, Guwahati with a bed capacity of 900.

It is to be mentioned here that, currently Guwahati city has 4 Covid Care Centres- Sarusajai with a bed capacity of 430, SIRD with a bed capacity of 274, Royal Global University with a bed capacity of 900 and Rituraj Hotel with a bed capacity of 80.

It is to be mentioned here that with the rapid rise in Covid-19 cases in the state of Assam, the state government extended the ongoing Night curfew.

Meanwhile, starting May 16 curfew will be in place from 12 noon instead of the current 2 PM and all shops and business establishments would shut by 11 AM instead of the present 1 PM, the Assam government said in its new COVID SOP. The curfew will be in place from 12 noon to 6 AM the next morning. The new SOP comes into effect from 5 AM tomorrow (May 16, Sunday).

Other restrictive measures like plying of odd-even numbered cars, closure of government and non-government offices, educational institutes, and weekly markets continue to remain the same. The exemptions announced earlier continue.

Assam Police DGP Bhaskarjyoti Mahanta on May 12 said that if anyone is found violating the COVID-19 SOP/guidelines, strict actions including 'attempt to murder' case will be registered against such violators. Addressing a press meet the Assam DGP asked the people of Assam to strictly follow all the rules of the new SOP.

Further, the DGP said, "Reports are coming of people closing shops from the front and working from inside; such shopkeepers will be in deep trouble and booked under DDMA act."
