GUWAHATI: Kamrup (metro) has recorded a significant increase in the number of COVID-19 cases in the last 10 days. With Durga Puja around the corner, the sudden spike in coronavirus cases is likely to put a dampener to the festive mood.
According to National Health Mission (NHM) data, Kamrup (metro) recorded 74 positive cases with no deaths on September 19. The next day –on September 20– the number of positive cases detected went up to 84 and five deaths were recorded. On September 21, the number of positive cases detected increased to 129 but no deaths were recorded. On September 22, 93 positive cases were detected and one death was recorded. On September 23, 107 positive cases were detected and two deaths were recorded. On September 24, 122 positive cases were detected and one death was recorded. On September 25, 133 positive cases were detected but no death was recorded.
As per NHM data, in the last 10 days from September 16 to September 25, the total number of positive cases registered in Kamrup (metro) is 1,090 – which is the highest in the State. Jorhat comes second with 350 cases recorded during this period of 10 days, followed by Golaghat with 314 cases, Lakhimpur with 214 cases, Kamrup with 184 cases, Sonitpur with 176 cases, Darrang with 175 cases, Barpeta with 156 cases, Sivasagar with 152 cases, Nagaon with 127 cases and Dibrugarh with 113 cases. The other districts of the State have cases below 100.
The total number of COVID positive cases in the State till September 25 stood at 6,00,423 while 5,89,924 people were discharged. Assam recorded 5,838 COVID fatalities till September 25. The total number of positive cases detected in the State on September 25 was 375 while four deaths were recorded.
According to health department sources, seeing the sudden increase in the number of COVID cases in Kamrup (metro), the district administration is on alert and is closely monitoring the situation.
