GUWAHATI: On the issue of detection and deportation of foreigners, people of the Koch Rajbongshi community are being harassed by the administration, alleged the KRNC (Koch Rajbongshi National Convention) on Wednesday.

Elaborating on the statement, KRNC general secretary Biswajit Roy said along with safeguarding jati, mati, bheti (community, land and base), Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal talks about providing constitutional safeguard to the indigenous people. However, the BJP led-Central government introduced the CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) to give citizenship to the Hindus residing in foreign countries.

"The government is trying to destroy the Koch Rajbongshi community in the name of detection and deportation of foreigners. Recently, 68-year-old Sunil Barman from West Ankarbari under Chirang district was sent a notice to be present at Dhaligaon Police Station after he was suspected to be a foreigner," Roy said.

The KRNC condemned the incident and demanded the State government and the police administration to withdraw the notice within one week. The KRNC said they will stage protest if the notice is not withdrawn.

Further, Roy underlined that in 1947, the Koch Rajbongshis left their sovereignty and joined India. But, the Indian government didn't pay respect and honour to the Koch Rajbongshis and is harassing the community residing in Assam and West Bengal. "If the Centre thinks the Koch Rajbongshis are foreigners or a burden than a separate Kamatapur State should be announced for the community to live peacefully," he added.
