GUWAHATI: As Guwahati Police have become stricter regarding the fraudulent land document racket that is going on unabated in Kamrup (M), and following the investigation related to it, one of the kingpins of the racket while trying to escape from police was injured in a police firing on Sunday night. The land mafioso is identified as Ramen Modahi, a resident of Lalung Gaon in Lokhra, who is known as a land grabber in the area.

According to sources, the operation took place when the Crime Branch and Basistha Police conducted a search operation based on the information provided by the arrested accused in order to locate additional suspects. Ramen, on learning about the police operation, tried to escape from the scene but got shot in the leg, rendering him immobile. Later, he was admitted to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) and is receiving treatment under the custody of police duty.

Five people have already been arrested in connection with the land fraud, based on the case (12/23) registered at the Cyber Police Station. They are identified as Tapash Choudhury, Advocate Mainul Hoque (40), Nitul Das (40), who is a junior assistant in the office of the sub-registrar in the DC office, and Dhrub Jyoti Barman (34), a data entry operator in the Revenue Circle office in Dispur. And on Saturday, Bapdhan Das (58), Lat Mandal of Dispur Revenue Circle, was arrested. Based on their confession, Guwahati police could arrest Ramen Modahi.
