GUWAHATI: The Bhumi Adhikar Sangram Samiti organised its 21st establishment day on Sunday and demanded the state government hand over the rights of the land to the landless people across the state before August 15 and threatened to take out continuous protests from that day if these demands are not met.

The president of the organisation, Prabin Jyoti Kalita, was present for the event. He said, “We have been fighting for the land rights of the people of the state for 21 years now. All governments made fake promises regarding these rights and did nothing for the people. We are very hopeful that the current government will resolve this problem of ours through the Basundhara platform.”

He also mentioned that Guwahati city has 85,000 landless families while the state has over 40 lakh such families and asked the state government to take all necessary precautions regarding the same. He added that a large number of people have applied for land under Basundhara 2.0, but the details regarding how land allocation will be made have not been made public by the state government.

“We demand that the process and rules by which the land rights will be allocated to the landless people of the state be made public and transparent. We also demand an immediate stop to the cutting of the hills and damage to the rivers and lakes across the state,” he added. They also demanded the distribution of proper documents for the government land, Khas land, Exsonia land, and Bhudan land, and added that if these demands are not met by the government, they will be forced to float a political party in the coming days.
