GUWAHATI: Litterateurs and intelligentsia must bring into focus Assam's historical facts and evidence so that the new generation and outsiders can know about Assam's glorious history, said Assam Legislative Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary during the release of a book spanning eight volumes, on Monday at the central hall, Assam Legislative Assembly, Dispur.

This collection of eight volumes of the book titled Axomiya Bhaxar Atmaprotisthanr Sangram or Etihaas aru Ananya Prasanga has been compiled by former minister Nilamani Sen Deka.

Daimary further said, "Assam's historical evidence are scattered all across the State. Assam's history is older than the Mahabharata era. However, we do not have written details of Assam's significance in the Mahabharata. We have to highlight these things and here, litterateurs and intelligentsia have to play a leading role."

"When I was a member of the Rajya Sabha, I would often include Assam's history in my speeches, and the other members would listen to them keenly," said Daimary. Speaking about the Bodo language, he said that according to a Japanese researcher, the Bodo language was more than 2,000 years old and at one point in time, the Bodo language was spread across eastern Nepal, Jalpaiguri, Assam, Cooch Behar and part of Bangladesh. "This is an important fact," said Daimary and further added, "Assam saw efficient administration during the Ahom rule but this could not be continued later."

Addressing the gathering, Deputy Speaker Dr Numal Momin said that today, the Assamese language has been accepted by people as the primary language for communication. "From the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), hills to Barak Valley, Assamese is being accepted by people for communication despite few sporadic incidents," he said.

Former minister Nilamani Sen Deka, while speaking about the book, said that the book has eight volumes and 3,474 pages. "The book includes the Assamese language movement, how Assamese was first studied in Calcutta University, the history of Assam's land issue and the States Reorganisation Commission (SRC), along with other important historical events," said Deka.

Among others, MLA Bharat Narah, MLA and former president of Axam Xahitya Xabha, Parmananda Rajbongshi and Head of the Department of Political Science of Gauhati University, Akhil Ranjan Dutta were present on the occasion.
