GUWAHATI: A classic love triangle, which seems straight out of a Bollywood potboiler, was the motive behind the Athgaon shooting incident of 2018. Police sources have revealed that the accused in the shooting incident - Aditya Singh alias Niraj Singh - allegedly had an affair with the wife of victim Tribhuban Gupta.

In January, 2018 a case was registered at Bharulumukh PS after Tribhuban Gupta, a businessman of Athgaon, was shot at his business premises, injuring him seriously. The main accused Aditya Singh alias Niraj Singh had been arrested by Muzzafarpur Police in Bihar in a case registered under the NDPS Act. The West Guwahati Police Division (WGPD) coordinated with the Muzzafarpur and brought him to Guwahati recently.

Police sources said that Aditya Singh had made many visits to Guwahati before the incident. He and Tribhuban Gupta's wife hail from Muzzafarpur, Bihar while Gupta hails from Vaishali district of Bihar. Aditya Singh and Gupta's wife were allegedly romantically involved. But fate had other plans for them. Aditya Singh got married to someone else in 2001 while she got married to Gupta in 2014 and settled in Guwahati.

Tribhuban Gupta and his wife allegedly had problems in their marriage and his wife had returned to Bihar two years after their marriage in 2016. But she returned to Guwahati to her husband again. Aditya Singh had reportedly threatened Gupta before the shooting incident. After the incident, Gupta's wife went back to Bihar but they have not filed for divorce.

Police sources said that Aditya Singh is a goon who had once been arrested in an excise case, before being arrested in the NDPS Act case.
