GUWAHATI: Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha and Senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge has asserted that the Congress-led Mahajoot will win most of the seats in the polls and form government will absolute majority.
Taking a dig at the State BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party), Kharge stressed that the saffron party has failed to keep its promises made in its election manifesto and thus there is anti-incumbency against the party.
"The Congress highlighted various issues of the public in the Rajya Sabha. However, the ruling party didn't give any response against the Congress' arguments. During the BJP regime, the prices of petrol, diesel and LPG cylinders have drastically surged. To cover their failures, the government keeps on saying that the Congress didn't do any work in the last 70 years. But, it is to be noted that in the last 70 years, among various other parties, the BJP also formed government with Atal Bihar Vajpayee as the Chief Minister," Kharge underlined.
Addressing the media AICC spokesperson Gourav Vallabh said, "With the first phase of polling underway in Assam, clear signs of a landslide victory are emerging from all parts of Assam. The Congress has gone to the people with a vow of fulfilling its 5 Guarantees that are going to be a game-changer for the future of Assam and the Assamese people. With the finish line in sight, even the BJP has acceded defeat. Throughout the campaign the BJP has tried to run away from questions related to its performance in the last 5 years."
Vallabh pointed out that the BJP is so 'scared' of being asked about the accomplished promises from the last 5 years that the incumbent CM has been missing from its core campaign.
"Why would any party not go into an election with the face of the incumbent CM? The Congress went with the face of late Tarun Gogoi in all of the last 4 elections because we could proudly showcase the work that his government had accomplished. The BJP has denied tickets to 18 per cent of its sitting MLAs (11 out of 60 MLAs). It wants to erase the wounds of unfulfilled promises from the minds of the people," Vallabh opined.
Further, the AICC spokesperson alleged that the United People's Party Liberal (UPPL), a BJP ally, has promised that surrendered cadres of militant organizations will be provided jobs in army and paramilitary forces according to their ranks.
Slamming the UPPL, Vallabh questioned, "Since when can a State party promise jobs in the Defense forces? It is again a desperate attempt to misguide people for votes. Why is the BJP silent on this?"
He also urged the Election Commission of India to take action against the UPPL's statement.
