GUWAHATI: A man named Rintu Baruah jumped into the river Brahmaputra from the old Saraighat Bridge here on Thursday morning.

According to reports, the man came in a Scooty and jumped into the river after parking the vehicle in the middle of the bridge.

Baruah was a resident of the Bamunimaidan area.

Meanwhile, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Army and the police have started search operations but have been unable to locate the man till the filing of this report.

It may be recalled that in a similar incident on July 10, a youth went missing after he jumped into the river Brahmaputra from the Saraighat Bridge. According to eyewitnesses, the youth hung on the railing of the bridge for around half an hour and kept on saying that he would jump into the river.

The local people, SDRF and the city police all made an effort to convince him not to take the drastic step. However, the youth ultimately jumped into the river.
