WAR ON DRUGS
STAFF REPORTER
GUWAHATI: In a big seizure under the 'War on Drugs' drive of the Assam Police, a team of Guwahati Police, led by Joint Commissioner of Police, Partha Sarathi Mahanta, seized high-quality heroin worth crores from a truck in the Basistha area of the city on Monday night. The team launched an operation and intercepted a truck bearing registration number JH-19A-5623 in the Basistha area. The team seized 4.5 kg heroin from the truck and arrested two drug suppliers.
Talking to media persons on Tuesday, JCP Partha Sarathi Mahanta said that the drugs mafia keep changing their modus operandi and delivery methods. This time, the seized heroin was concealed inside the bumper of the truck. "The value of the seized heroin will be around Rs 31.50 crore-Rs 36 crore in the international market," said Mahanta.
He further said that the consignment was coming from Myanmar via Moreh in Manipur and was meant for distribution in north India. "The consigment was loaded in the truck some days ago. As security had been beefed up for Republic Day celebration, the suppliers decided to lie low. After January 26, they decided to smuggle the consigment, assuming that security will not be tight. But our intelligence unit was tracking the truck from Moreh and finally we seized the consignment," said Mahanta. As the heroin was hidden inside the bumper, it took the police team a lot of time to cut open the bumper to recover the consigment.
The arrested drug suppliers have been identified as Mohd Idomi and Nawaz Khan, both residents of Manipur. A case (151/22 u/a 21(c)/24/29 of NDPS Act) has been registered under Basistha Police Station.
Last year, the Assam Police launched the war on drugs at the direction of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and since then, huge quantity of drugs have been seized and many drug peddlers have been arrested.
