Only environment-friendly materials must be used, Puja committees should refrain from collection of money

GUWAHATI: A meeting was organized in the premises of the District Library auditorium on Tuesday to discuss the preparations for the upcoming Durga Puja celebration in the Kamrup (metro) district. Commissioner of Police, Guwahati, Diganta Baruah and District Commissioner Pallav Gopal Jha attended this meeting. Organizing members of several Durga Puja committees and several key officials of the police and local administration also attended this meeting.
Additional District Commissioner Dhruba Jyoti Hazarika listed the rules and regulations to be followed during the days of Durga Puja as well as during the immersion of the idols at the end of the festival. The officials from the Pollution Control Board spoke about the important things to be kept in mind regarding the construction of the idols and the usage of only environment-friendly materials during the puja celebrations. The usage of any plastic materials has been restricted and the puja committee members have been told to ensure the proper removal of all materials after the immersion of the idols as soon as possible.
The DC also mentioned some of the key regulations to be followed during the puja celebrations. These include the setting up of Close Circuit Cameras at all puja mandaps, fire safety equipment and APDCL-verified safety measures. The also requested them to reduce the number of people and vehicles at the time of immersion.
Diganta Baruah said that the committee members should keep vigil to avoid any unexpected situation and misunderstanding. The committees must also refrain from any money collection apart from the donation given willingly to them, and they must also ensure that the puja celebration does not lead to traffic congestion. They must also ensure that proper arrangements are made for the free movement of fire tenders and other emergency vehicles. He said that experts should be hired to control the lighting and other equipment to avoid any mishaps and it must be ensured that there is no use of narcotics on the day of immersion of the idols. He said that the police would take strict action against those who violate the orders of the Gauhati High Court regarding sound pollution after 10 PM.
