GUWAHATI: The rate of work-completion under various MGNREGA (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act) schemes in Assam is yet to pick up the required pace. During the last fiscal (2020-2021), only 18.58 per cent (of the commenced schemes) were completed. Official statistics indicate that altogether 1,76,389 works were started during the mentioned period. Of them, only 32,774,works were completed. On the other hand, a total of such 1,43, 615 schemes are yet to be completed.
The worst-performing districts in this sector are Dhubri (4.81%); Kamrup-M (4.98%); Hailakandi (6.47%) Kokrajhar (7.94%); Cachar (8.86% ); Morigaon (8.52%); and Sivasagar (8.97%) among others
The comparatively better performing district in various MGNREGA works is the Charaideo District with 51.83 % work-completion rate in the previous financial year (2020-2021). During that fiscal, Charaideo District completed 850 MGNREGA works of the already started 1,640 such schemes. The second rank in this regard goes to Dima Hasao District with 42.35% work-completion rate.
The MGNREGA works are implemented by the panchayats, and monitored by the Commissionerate of Panchayat & Rural Development Department.
Through MGNREGA, the government focuses on the creation of employment generation and also assets in the rural areas. Against this backdrop, the State of Assam needs to buckle its straps at the earliest. The Department Minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass must take a pro-active role to galvanize the sector.
