GUWAHATI: Thousands of All Assam Mid-Day Meal Employees' Union members staged a protest in front of the SSA (Sarba Siksha Abhiyan), Asom office at Kahilipara in Guwahati today in support of their demands, including clearing their dues before the Magh Bihu.

The union demands the SSA to pay an honorarium to the mid-day meal workers for 12 months a year, besides Rs 7,200 additionally every month based on the minimum wage of the State Government. The union also demands that the SSA should pay a one-time grant amounting to Rs 3 lakh at the end of the term of every mid-day meal worker. The union also opposed the policy of providing mid-day meal works to NGOs. They also raised the demand for their social security.

Union general secretary Kanaklata Das said, "We work for a meagre honorarium. The government pays us an honorarium for ten months. Often, the honorarium for eight months remains due. In 2022 the government released the honorarium of five months. The honorarium of three months is still due. We want honorarium every month round the year, not for ten months only." On social security, she said, "Mid-day meal workers need a pension, insurance and medical assistance."

A few mid-day meal workers also raised the demand for schemes like arunodoi for mid-day meal workers.
