GUWAHATI: State Health & Family Welfare, Finance, and Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma diagnosed with a stone in his kidney on Sunday. A team of senior doctors of the Gauhati Medical College & Hospital (GMCH) confirmed the presence of stone following an ultrasound scan done upon the minister.

Sarma underwent ultrasonography at the GMCH following an 'extreme' stomachache that he suddenly suffered during a meeting at the office of National Health Mission (NHM) on G.S. Road on Sunday morning. He was immediately rushed to the GMCH from the NHM office. He later said a stone measuring 3.76 mm was detected in his kidney.

"After an episode of extreme pain in the stomach, doctors in GMCH have detected a kidney stone measuring 3.76 mm through Ulltra Sono Graphy in VUJ position. Taking saline and injections to overcome the pain. Will take rest for the day," Sarma tweeted.

After spending a few hours at GMCH, Sarma was discharged from GMCH. Doctors advised him for a few days rest.

"Hectic travelling and inadequate intake of water might be the cause of forming stone in his kidney. Fortunately, the size of the stone is small and it should have a natural passage without any surgical intervention. The Minister has been advised to follow necessary pre-cautions and he should take rest for a few days. All other health parameters of the minister are fine," a senior doctor at GMCH said.

Sarma has been leading the State's fight against COVID-19, visiting quarantine centres, hospitals and even monitoring the admission of positive patients to the medical establishments.
