GUWAHATI: Transport, Fisheries and Excise Minister Parimal Suklabaidya launched a river ranching programme, an initiative funded under PMMSY and monitored by National Fisheries Development Board, today. The programme has been launched statewide across various districts under the guidance of respective district fishery development offices.

The minister today launched this programme in the Kamrup Metropolitan District at Uzanbazar Ghat wherein he released two lakh fish seeds in the river Brahmaputra.

The river ranching Programme aims at promoting sustainable use and conservation of fishery resources in an economically and environmentally responsible manner while ensuring the upgrading of traditional fisheries.

The river ranching programme is incorporated under PMMSY Scheme as a special scheme.

In Assam, 22 districts have been selected to initiate this programme with a target of releasing 29 lakh fish seeds, bred at a cost of Rs 87 lakh.
