GUWAHATI, June 26: Yakub Ali, one of the most wanted rhino poachers, was arrested near Meghdoot Bhawan at Panbazar in Guwahati on Tuesday. He was arrested by the personnel of Northern Range of the Kaziranga National Park (KNP).
Yakub, a history-sheeter, had killed a rhino on May 29 this year at Panpur in Bishwanath Chariali and taken its horn away. A case (NR04/18) was filed in that connection. In November 2016, he had killed a rhino at Bagori in the national park and taken its horn away.
Earlier in 2014, in a case relating to killing of rhino, the CBI had filed a charge-sheet against him. The court did issue a non-bailable arrest warrant against him in that case.
The State Forest Department suspects that Yakub might have come to Guwahati on Tuesday to seek bail in the CBI case.
Yakub, hailing from Bhojmarigaon in Sootea, has a ten-member gang. Four members of the gang were arrested earlier. Yakub has been taken to Bishwanath Chariali.
