GUWAHATI: N F Railway conducted drives against illegal or unauthorized hawkers, vendors, smokers, and litterers to free its station premises from illegal activities. During the last two months, a series of drives were conducted over the five divisions of the NF Railway, thereby recovering an amount of Rs. 10.54 lakh as a fine. In this connection, under relevant sections of the 1989 Railways Act, 4661 persons were prosecuted.

During the months of April and May, over the five divisions, Rs. 3.20 lakh was collected as a fine from illegal or unauthorized hawkers or vendors, and 1077 persons were prosecuted. Apart from this, Rs. 1.74 lakh and Rs. 5.59 lakh were collected as fines from persons smoking and littering, respectively, at station premises. In this connection, 926 smokers and 2658 litterers were prosecuted.

A total of 75 major railway stations were freed of illegal hawking. 14 stations, including Katihar, Siliguri, and New Jalpaiguri under Katihar division; 14 stations, including Guwahati, Kamakhya, and Lumding under Lumding division; 18 stations, including Kokrajhar, New Coochbehar, and New Alipurduar under Alipurduar division; 13 stations, including Dibrugarh, New Tinsukia, and Mariani under Tinsukia division; and 16 stations, including Rangiya, Goalpara Town, and New Bongaigaon under Rangiya division, are freed from illegal hawkers or vendors, and these efforts are sustained by the RPF (Railway Protection Force).
