GUWAHATI: After the two-day national executive meeting of the BJP that concluded in New Delhi on Tuesday, the State BJP is gearing up for the 2024 Lok Sabha election.

Apart from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and State BJP president Bhabesh Kalita, several office-bearers of the State BJP took part in the national executive. The party expects to win more Lok Sabha seats from Assam and other States in the North-East in 2024.

Talking to The Sentinel on Wednesday, Bhabesh Kalita said, "The party held the national executive with an eye on the 2024 Lok Sabha election, which is barely 400 days away. The national executive discussed organizational matters, including that of Assam. We are targeting over 12 Lok Sabha seats in 2024 in the State".

On organizational matters, Kalita said, "We are strong right from the grass-roots level. We have 45 lakh members in the State. Right now, we are not thinking of enrolling new members. Our thrust is on proper management of the 45 lakh party workers. We will work at the booth level to take the works of the State Government led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to the masses".

On the Opposition front in the State, Kalita said, "The Congress and other parties in Assam are not at all a factor. The developmental works of the Government have made their presence in the State redundant".

The State has 14 Lok Sabha seats. The BJP won nine, Congress won three, AIUDF won one, and an Independent candidate won one in the 2019 Lok Sabha election in Assam.

The next Lok Sabha poll is expected to be held in April-May, 2023.
