GUWAHATI: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a directive to the Commissioner of Police, Guwahati to take appropriate action within eight weeks against the police personnel of Paltanbazar Police Station's Traffic Branch who had assaulted a motorcycle rider named Vicky Gupta recently.

Meanwhile, close on the heels of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressing his displeasure over police personnel mistreating innocent civilians, citing the example of Vicky Gupta, the victim secured bail from the CJM's court here on Monday.

It may be mentioned that after being assaulted by the police, Vicky Gupta was arrested on the basis of a case registered by the errant policemen at the Paltanbazar Police Station in connection with the incident.

Subsequently, however, the in-charge of Paltanbazar Traffic Branch, Pranab Kumar Deka, was closed to Police Reserve and constable Fakhruddin Ahmed was placed under suspension by the Deputy Commissioner of Guwahati Police (Administration) after a video became viral of the police physically assaulting Vicky Gupta in the presence of his pillion-riding wife and three-year-old child. The incident had resulted in injuries to the woman and child due to the motorcycle falling down during the fracas.

On Sunday, the Chief Minister had disclosed that he had directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) to personally tender an apology to Gupta over the incident.
