GUWAHATI: Reiterating the demand for cancelling the National Pension System (NPS) and restoring the Old Pension Scheme (OPS), the All Assam Government NPS Employees Association (AAGNPSEA) has announced a mass agitation from January 20 to 31. Achyutananda Hazarika, president of AAGNPSEA, said that the association had a meeting with the chief minister on August 1, 2023, where the CM gave a positive response, which made the association hopeful regarding the cancellation of the NPS and the restoration of the OPS. But the association has been deeply saddened, as the state as well as the central government has not taken any steps till now to do so.

Hazarika said, "The employees have decided to intensify their democratic agitation to secure an insecure retirement life." "NPS has become a social problem, so the employees of the state will take the issue of restoring the OPS to the people. As part of the effort, the association will stage agitations from Sadiya to Dhubri from January 20 to 31, 2024, for the restoration of the OPS. On January 20, employees will be staging a one-day strike in all districts across the state. On that day, the district committees of the associations will organize a protest rally in the district and sub-division headquarters from 11 a.m. onwards, take signatures from the participants, and submit a memorandum to the Chief Minister of the state through the district commissioner or sub-divisional officers. Along with a demand letter that will be sent to all the MLAs and MPs in demand of restoring OPS," Hazarika stated. Hazarika further stated, "A mass agitation or rally will be held in Guwahati, which will be attended by the national-level leaders who will be participating on January 31."
