GUWAHATI: The National Institute of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj (NIRDPR), North Eastern Regional Centre, Guwahati, Assam organized a one-day national webinar on education, skill development and employment of youth as part of Azadi Ka Amrut Mahotsav celebration (75 years of India's Independence).
The main aim of the webinar was to appraise the current state of education, skill development and employment for Indian youth, deliberate the key challenges concerning training and job opportunities for youth and to suggest various measures for facilitating the transition of young people to the world of work.
The webinar was inaugurated by Dr. Nirmaljeet Singh Kalsi, Chairman, National Council for Vocational Education and Training, Ministry of Education, Government of India, in presence of Dr.Murugesan Ramasamy, Director, NIRDPR NERC Guwahati, and Dr.T.Vijaya Kumar, Associate Professor and Webinar Coordinator. Dr.T.Vijaya Kumar, Associate Professor and Webinar Coordinator, while welcoming the delegates and guests, emphasized the need for identifying the desired route to create meaningful employment and sustainable livelihood for youth.
Dr. Murugesan Ramasamy, Director, NERC NIRDPR, while delivering the opening remarks, highlighted that at present the youth is in cross roads after completing the higher secondary schooling. "Skilling is to achieve economic growth in India. The educational institutions should focus on developing skilled persons instead of simply providing degrees. Training and providing employment for youth is to be taken up as a priority area and every one should strive for this," he said.
Dr. Nirmaljeet Singh Kalsi, Chairperson, National Council of Vocational Education and Training (NCVET), Ministry of Education, Government, of India while delivering the inaugural address of the webinar, emphasized that the Prime Minister's vision is making India the skill capital of the world. He stressed the need of National Institute of Rural Development and Panchyati Raj and NCVET working together with mutual support for empowering the new skill sets among rural youth.
Prof. Ayon Battacharjee, Dean, National Institute of Technology of Meghalaya, deliberated on higher education among tribal youth in Northeast India. He said that the tribal youth of north-eastern States demonstrated huge potential in sports and administration. "At present 65 universities are functioning in Northeast India. Education is available in this region but harnessing the potential of the tribal youth is the major requirement. In terms of area and population, Arunachal Pradesh has largest area and Sikkim has smallest area and most of the areas are inaccessible," he said. He also referred to the National Education Policy 2020 and the provisions of the policy meant for transformation of educational system, institutional re-structuring and consolidation.
