GUWAHATI: The North Eastern Hydraulic & Allied Research Institute (NEHARI), an arm of the Brahmaputra Board, jointly organized with the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati (IIT-G) a two-day dissemination & training workshop on - "BRAHMA Model - Braided River Aid - Hydro Morphological Analyzer" from 17th - 18th August 2022.
The training workshop commenced with an opening address by Er Ranjit Deka, Director, NEHARI, Brahmaputra Board, Ministry of Jal Shakti, Government of India. He said that the BRAHMA Model: Braided River Aid - Hydro Morphological Analyser is the first indigenous Indian river model developed by IIT-Guwahati under the leadership of Prof. Arup Kumar Sarma within the provision of an MoU titled - "Mathematical Model study of River Brahmaputra with emphasis on climatic change" signed between Brahmaputra Board and IIT-Guwahati.
The Technical Session was addressed by three speakers namely Prof. Arup Kr. Sarma, IIT Guwahati, Dr Anupal Baruah, NESAC, Dr. Bandita Barman, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad. In the session, the main objectives and the practical implementations of the BRAHMA Model were emphasized. Prof Sarma highlighted the problems and their solutions achieved through the BRAHMA Model in the North Eastern Region of India.
Thirty-four participants from all over India from various organizations viz. Central Water Commission (CWC), New Delhi; Central Water and Power Research Station (CWPRS) Pune; National Institute of Hydrology (NIH) Guwahati; Water Resources Department, Arunachal Pradesh; Water Resources Department, Assam; Water Resources Department, Meghalaya; and Water Resources Department, Nagaland; along with Brahmaputra Board and IIT-Guwahati actively participated in the training programme. Out of the participants from IIT Guwahati who joined the workshop, a team of five served as trainers of the BRAHMA Model.
Prof. Arup Kumar Sarma presided over the training workshop and was actively involved in training the officers and students from various organizations. Prof Sarma widely emphasized the usage of the BRAHMA Model in designing various aspects of flood mapping, flood forecasting, the impact of climate change, handling practical river problems, etc. Er Ranjit Deka, Director, NEHARI was also closely associated with the training programme. Er Ranjit Deka appreciated the efforts of IIT-Guwahati in designing such application software.
The participants also visited the physical model at NEHARI during the training programme to have an on-spot idea of the working of a physical model, which has been constructed by NEHARI, Brahmaputra Board.
During the workshop, hands-on exercises were conducted for both BRAHMA 1D and BRAHMA 2D considering some practical scenarios, a press release said.
