Guwahati: The North East Students' Organisation (NESO) would display black flags and black banners at important locations across all the Northeast states to observe December 11 as Black Day. December 11 is the day when the Parliament had passed the highly contentious Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

NESO has announced in a statement issued on Tuesday (December 9) that it will observe December 11 as a 'Black Day' to mark its continued opposition to the Citizenship Act.

Samuel B. Jyrwa, chairman of NESO said, "Despite the relentless opposition of the indigenous people of the Northeast against the Citizenship Amendment Bill 2019, the government of India did not pay heed and finally passed the draconian law known as the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) 2019, in the Rajya Sabha on December 11, 2019."

Therefore, NESO has announced that December 11 will always be remembered as a black day for the entire Northeast. Therefore, to continue this observation of this Black Day, The North East Students' Organization has decided that black flags and black banners will be displayed at all important places in seven states.

"This observation is to give a message to the Government of India that we are against the Citizenship Amendment Act 2019, and also, to remind our people of another political injustice that the Government of India has perpetrated on the indigenous people of the Northeast," the statement said.

"So, NESO calls upon the people of the Northeast to support this observation (Black Day) and at the same time continue fighting for the just cause of our God-given right," Jyrwa further stated in the statement.

The anti-CAA protests are still on in different parts of Assam.

The North East Students' Organisation comprises of eight top student bodies of seven Northeast States- the Khasi Students' Union (KSU), All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU), All Assam Students' Union (AASU), Tripura Students' Federation (TSF), Naga Students' Federation (NSF), Garo Students' Union (GSU), Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), and All Arunachal Pradesh Students' Union (AAPSU).
