GUWAHATI: The under-construction Assam Assembly house will have a seating capacity to accommodate 180 legislators. The target set for completion of the complex is December 2021. A special panel of the House also approved an additional amount of Rs 107 crore for the project.

Revealing this to The Sentinel on Thursday, ALA (Assam Assembly Assembly) Speaker Biswajit Daimary added, "This has been designed in view of the proposed delimitation process of Legislative Assembly Constituencies (LACs). According to rule, this delimitation move will commence across the country in 2026."

The Speaker further said that "after the delimitation process, the number of LACs will increase from the present 126 LACs."

He further said that "according to the earlier estimate, the new Assembly house had a provision of 130 seats for the elected representatives of the State. However, keeping in view the possible rise in the number of LACs and consequently, the MLAs (Members of Legislative Assembly) following the delimitation process, the GPC (General Purpose Committee) of ALA took this decision on Thursday".

The Speaker also said, "The GPC further gave its nod to some modifications in the design of the architecture of this new Assembly house.

Mentionably, the GPC comprises the ALA Speaker, Deputy Speaker, Ministers and MLAs. During the meeting, higher officials of the PWD (Public Works Department) were also present.
