GUWAHATI: The NFR (Northeast Frontier Railways) has surpassed its yearly target of earnings from sale of scrap items during the last financial year 2020-21. Sale of scrap is done through e-auction. During this period, the NFR earned Rs 94.64 crore from scrap sale surpassing the target of Rs 75 crore by 26.33%. The Northeast Frontier Railway has also surpassed the previous year's scrap-sale earnings of Rs 87.68 crore by 7.97%. This increase in earnings assumes huge significance considering the COVID-related scenario that prevailed throughout last year.

It may also be mentioned here that, Indian Railways has achieved highest-ever scrap sale in Financial Year 2020-21. Through this sale, the Indian Railways earned total Rs 4573 crore during 2020-21 as compared to Rs 4,333 crore during 2019-20 which is 5.5% higher. The previous best was Rs 4409 crore in 2009-10.

The Indian Railways makes all out efforts to optimally utilise resources by mobilising scrap materials and sale through e-auction. Generation and sales of unserviceable/scrap railway material is an ongoing process and is monitored at various levels both in Zonal Railways and in Railway Board. The Railway administration makes all out efforts to mobilise scrap materials and sale through e-auction. In construction projects, scrap is normally generated in Gauge Conversion works. Permanent Way items released during track renewal works which are not reusable on track are offered for scrap. Scrap is also generated through other replacement and renewal works; and condemnation of assets. These scraps are disposed off in accordance with the Codal provisions of Railways, stated a press release.
