GUWAHATI: The N.F. Railway Mazdoor Union (NFRMU) on Wednesday claimed that the government has decided to hand over 150 trains and 50 stations to private entities and they will be allowed to charge fare on the market rate. It further claimed that the Kamakhya Station is also one of the targets, but the same is pending because of protests.
Addressing a press meet at Guwahati Press Club on Wednesday, the NFRMU stated that the N.F. Railway Mazdoor Union strongly opposes the decision to handover the trains and stations to the private parties. The NFRMU vowed that if the government sticks to its decision of privatizing the public properties, it should get ready to witness the repetition of 1974 when the Railways came to a grinding halt for 20 days.
The union further appealed all the Railway workers to get ready for an extreme protest or an indefinite strike against the ‘anti-labor policy’ of the government. The Union stated to stage a protest on Thursday in front of the N.F. Railway Office of the GM against the privatization policy and National Pension Scheme.
The NFRMU general secretary Rakhal Das Gupta said that Indian Railways is the cheapest mode of transportation, generating surplus year by year. He said, “The Government of India (GOI) and the Ministry of Railways have already handed over three trains to IRCTC and it is free to charge a fare. However, for these three trains fare is about 50% higher than what the Indian Railways are charging.
