GUWAHATI: Cotton University students were supposed to stage a protest in front of the Nehru Park on Tuesday against the supposed move to cut down the big, historic trees in the Park while renovating the Park. However, the protest was called off after the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) clarified that it had no plans to cut down any tree inside the Nehru Park.

GMDA CEO Kausar Jamil Hilaly said, "The news that GMDA will cut the big trees in the Nehru Park is completely false and baseless. We have no such plans. We will go ahead with the renovation work of the Park without cutting the trees."

A student of Cotton University said, "We have seen some small trees being cut inside the Park. We then came to know that the GMDA was planning to cut down the big trees inside the Park. These trees are a landmark. They add to the beauty of this area. We will not tolerate any move to cut down these trees. We were supposed to stage a protest against this but we called off the protest after the GMDA assured that no trees would be cut down."
