GUWAHATI: The Assam government on Friday announced that the Kalaguru Bishnu Rabha Award, 2021 would be conferred on noted sculptor Sonaram Nath and folk dancer Drona Bhuyan. The award carries Rs 2 lakh, a citation and an angabastra.

The Assam government has been conferring the award on June 20 every year since 1993 to observe the death anniversary of Kalaguru Bishnu Prasad Rabha. However, this year the award will be conferred on a different date, said the Director of Cultural Affairs, Assam.

Born on January 1, 1946, Sonaram Nath is the founder member of I.F.A.C.S, 1971. He has executed a mural on Mahatma Gandhi's life in Coimbatore and Thiruvananthapuram. He has made numerous busts and statutes for various organizations including the Piyali Phukan and Bhogeswar Baruah statues at Sivasagar. Nath was conferred the Tarun Duarah Memorial Oil India Award in 2015. Ojapali and Deodhani dancer, Drona Bhuyan was at Satghoria, Darrang district born in 1956. He has been conferred with various awards including — Mira Award 2012, the Guru title from the Ministry of Culture, Jibon Jora Sadhona Bota from Asom Sanskrit Mahasava, and an award from All Assam Students' Union in 2009.
