GUWAHATI: Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has made various parking slots in Guwahati free for public use. This comes after the GMC failed to collect payment of installments by the lessee of the respective parking lots in Guwahati city. The information was shared through a notification issued in a local newspaper by the Commissioner, Guwahati Municipal Corporation.
The official notification stated, "In the interest of public service and in supersession of all earlier orders. I am directed to inform all concerned that the parking slots of the defaulter lessees who have failed to deposit installments to Guwahati Municipal Corporation shall remain free for the public till the settlement of fresh tender for the FY 2021-22 or till they clear the dues, whichever is earlier. The list of parking slots is enclosed herewith.
Parking fee collection till the settlement of fresh tenders in the mentioned slots shall be illegal and if such activities are seen strict actions will be taken as per law."
Earlier, the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) said that it has started preparing to erect a multi-level automated car parking at MG Road, Panbazar in Guwahati.
According to sources, the parking was inaugurated on February 15, 2021. The multi-level parking adjacent to Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital has been freshly painted and the other minor construction work is in process.
Notably, the multi-level car project was sanctioned way back in 2011 with a cost of Rs 10.54 crore. The parking has the facility to accommodate 250 vehicles (four-wheelers) at a time. It is to be noted that the project which was given to Simplex Project Limited, Calcutta was left abandoned for the past four years, resulting in serious traffic jams around Panbazar.
