NRC Assam: Centre Sending 51 Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) Companies

GUWAHATI: As many as 51 more companies of CAPF (Central Armed Police Force) are going to join shortly the 174 companies of CAPF already deployed on NRC duty in Assam. Both Dispur and the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) are not ready to leave any lapse on the post-NRC publication security in the State.

Soon after their arrival in the State, the 51 companies of CAPF will be deployed in various areas in the State. On their part, the State government and the MHA have already mapped the vulnerable areas and districts in the State. According to sources, as many as 14 districts in the State have been identified as sensitive ones. The deployment of CAPF forces will be completed before the publication of the final NRC.

A few CAPF companies deployed on general law-and-order duty in the State were withdrawn by the Centre recently for their deployment in Jammu and Kashmir after the abrogation of Article 370 and 35A. However, with the State Government taking up the matter with the MHA, the withdrawn CAPF forces are going to return to the State soon.

The State government is also going to deploy the State police battalions for the post-NRC security. All NRC Seva kendras, police stations, revenue circles offices, SDO (civil) offices, the offices of deputy commissioners and all other important offices will in the State come under security cover.

A good sign is that since the beginning of NRC update work in the State in mid-2015, no major law-and-order situation has been created in the State. However, neither Dispur nor MHA is ready to take any risk. The final NRC is going to be published on August 31, 2019 in accordance with the directive from the Supreme Court of India.
