GUWAHATI: Even personnel of the Central armed forces and State police forces are unable to resist the temptation of earning large sums of money quickly through the drugs and psychotropic substances trade.

This fact was proved when the Basistha police arrested two men and seized one lakh 'Yaba' tablets from their possession near Koinadhara here on Saturday night.

Of the two Manipur-based peddlers arrested in this connection, Thangkhogin Haokip (37) is an Assam Rifles personnel in Ukhrul, while Letminching Haokip is a personnel of the Manipur Police.

Police sources said that they intercepted a red Nexon car (MN 01AK 7218) on the basis of a tip-off and found the 'Yaba' tablets inside the vehicle. The two peddlers were initially posing as tourists, the sources said.

The two arrested persons later admitted their actual identities and informed that the consignment of Yaba tablets had been brought from Moreh and was supposed to be ultimately sent to Bangaluru, the sources added.

Meanwhile, Joint Commissioner of Guwahati Police Partha Sarathi Mahanta said that one of two arrested persons has been involved in the drugs racket for the last four years.

Mahanta also said the market value of Yaba tablets varies from place to place.

"In Bengaluru, Yaba tablets are sold for Rs 2,000 to 2,500 per piece, but it also depends on quality and demand," Mahanta said.
