Ongoing construction works continue to trigger traffic woes in Guwahati city

GUWAHATI: Construction of new infrastructure seems like an unending process in the city of Guwahati, and so does the traffic congestion associated with these construction projects. After a long duration of almost unending traffic woes, the residents of the Maligaon region as well as the Zoo Road region finally could breathe in some relief after the inauguration of both flyovers. But with the start of the construction of the new flyover connecting the Reserve Bank to Bamunimaidam, the residents are afraid that they will be forced to face the same ordeal again.

The problem has already started with the start of work for this new flyover, with barricades being placed in the Chandmari Colony locality, decreasing the width of the road and creating some new diversions in the traffic. And with that, traffic has already started piling up on Maniram Dewan Road, especially during peak school and office hours. The same can be said about the vehicles coming from the side of the Rajgarh Link Road and crossing the railway track to join the Maniram Dewan Road.

Paltan Bazar is another location where some construction is going on, causing a massive pileup of traffic in the area. The ongoing construction has reduced the size of the road to half its original width on the turn opposite to the Gold Cinemas, causing problems for all vehicles. With a number of vehicles parking and stopping near the turn, the problem increases manifold. Even though the traffic police personnel seem to be present near the location, they can hardly make any difference in the scenario. It can be mentioned that the available space in the turning is necessary for the buses to take the turn, meaning that with each bus that takes the turn, all other vehicles are forced to stop. Another area that has been seeing this problem for a very long time is the Hatigaon Road, whose reconstruction seems to be going on forever.

With these construction projects taking place in different parts of the city, drivers often use the by-lanes for travelling, especially those using two-wheelers. These vehicles further add to the traffic congestion at the points where such lanes and by-lanes meet the main roads. Now it remains to see how long such problems continue in Guwahati and the citizens continue to suffer because of them.
