Opposition Forum alleges misuse of CBI and ED by BJP-led government

GUWAHATI: The United Opposition Forum alleged that the BJP-led government has been using the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Enforcement Directorate (ED) for their political interests.

Addressing the media, Ripun Bora, President of the Trinamool Congress, Assam, one of the opposition alliance parties, said, "During the tenure of the BJP-led NDA Government at the centre from 2014 to 2023, we have seen that the two National Investigating Agencies of our Country, CBI and ED, which are constitutionally autonomous bodies, were misused by the BJP Government instead of allowing these two institutions to function at their own expense and were misused as puppets for their political interests. The BJP has misused CBI and ED to such an extent that the people of India are compelled to believe that the prime duty of CBI and ED is to control the political opponents of the BJP government instead of controlling economic offences and other crimes. The way the BJP government misused these two constitutional autonomy bodies is a threat to the democracy and Constitution of our country."

Ripun Bora further stated, "In the second tenure of the BJP-led NDA government from 2019 to 2023, out of the cases registered by the ED and CBI, 95% were against some selected opposition political leaders. Contrary to this partisan and vindictive policy of the BJP government, only 26 cases were registered by the ED and CBI against political leaders during the 10-year tenure of the Congress-led UPA government. Out of these, only 14 were opposition political leaders who oppose the Congress Party. On the other hand, there were no instances of ED and CBI registering cases against BJP leaders during 2014-2023. Rather, the BJP government has kept pending the old cases under ED and CBI against BJP leaders."

"On one hand, the BJP Government is targeting their political opponents, but on the other hand, why is the BJP Government silent about the multi-crore scams? Close associates of the BJP Government, like Nirav Modi, who was involved in several thousand crores of rupees in the PNB bank scam, fled to a foreign country immediately after the BJP came to power in 2014. Vijay Mallya, who was involved in the Rs 9,000 crore Kingfisher Airlines scam, fled from India to a foreign country after the BJP formed a government at the centre in 2014. Lalit Modi, who was involved in a multi-crore IPL scam, fled from India during BJP rule. Mehul Choksi, who was involved in several thousand crore bank scams, fled from India after the BJP formed the government at the centre in 2014," Bora further added.
