GUWAHATI: GMC (Guwahati Municipal Corporation) has taken up an over Rs 19.63-crore project under the 'Mitigation of Urban Flood in Guwahati City' for the year 2022-23 to clean and de-silt four major channels that snake through the city – Bahini, Bharalu, Morabharalu and Basistha.

The water-carrying capacity of these four rivers has been low due to heavy siltation every year. The rivers often remain choked with garbage and silt that hinder their free flow. Encroachment at various places in the courses of these rivers also obstructs the free flow of water during the rainy season.

According to a GMC official, the bidding process of the project currently underway will conclude on December 28, 2022. Thus, the civic body will give away the project works to contractors by January 2023 to complete the project before the monsoon.
