PM Modi lays emphasis on ‘Ease of Justice’ at Platinum Jubilee of Gauhati High Court

GUWAHATI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing the Platinum Jubilee function of the Gauhati High Court on April 14, said, "Along with global efforts to use Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the judicial system to bring efficiency, we should try to increase efforts to improve the ease of justice for the common citizens by using Artificial Intelligence. Technology plays a great role in modernizing the justice delivery system. Our government is also trying to utilize technologies for greater access to justice such as Aadhaar, Digital India Mission or PM Swamitva Yojna."
The Prime Minister pointed out that even the developed nations are dealing with the issue of unclear property rights, and said, "India has taken a huge lead when dealing with the issue of property rights. Drone mapping of more than one lakh villages in the country and property card distribution to lakhs of citizens have already been accomplished, which will result in a decline in property related cases. Technology has emerged as a powerful tool in achieving ease of living. So be it the government or the judiciary, the role of every institution and its constitutional obligation is connected to the ease of living of the common citizens." The Prime Minister also launched 'Assam Cop' mobile application designed by Assam police, and released the Souvenir of the High Court.
Emphasizing the combined responsibility of the Legislature, Judiciary and Executive, Narendra Modi further said, "We have repealed thousands of archaic laws, and reduced compliances. We have already ended more than 40,000 compliances and about 2,000 such laws besides decriminalization of many business provisions, which has reduced a great number of cases in the courts." The Prime Minister emphasized the need for the government and the judiciary to be sensitive towards those who have been incarcerated for petty crimes for years, and at the same time, commended the publication of 6 books by the High Court on customary laws. He also requested that these traditions should be taught in law schools. He also added, "Judiciary as a pillar of democracy has a strong and sensitive role to play in meeting unbounded inspirations of Indians in the 21st century. Besides, Gauhati High Court has its own heritage and identity."
Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the judiciary plays an important role in the democratic system of the country. He said, "India is celebrating 75 years of its independence, and coinciding with Prime Minister Narendra Modi envisions, India is becoming a world leader and self-reliant. The Judiciary, Executive and Legislature should march together in the same direction in the Azadi Ka Amrit Kaal of the next 25 years."
Underlining Prime Minister's call for "Ease of Justice", he said the justice delivery system in Assam and the North East must move forward with the aim of ensuring speedy justice for the poor and the downtrodden. Sarma also expressed hope that the Gauhati High Court would continue to play an important role in the field of justice delivery system in the coming days.
The Chief Minister further said, "The state government will take steps for construction of an integrated judicial complex in Guwahati from this year comprising the Gauhati High Court and the district courts of the Kamrup (Metro) and Kamrup which will bring the Sessions Court, CJM Court and the High Court in one campus."
Governor of Assam Gulab Chand Kataria, Union Law and Justice Minister Kiren Rijiju, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu, Judge of Supreme Court of India Hrishikesh Roy, Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court Sandeep Mehta, judges of Gauhati High Court, lawyers, judicial officers and other dignitaries were also present on the occasion.
